Spa Wisdom Monoi Moisture Balm

The Body Shop
$22

An incredibly rich and intensely creamy moisturizing balm to envelop your skin with the fantastic scent of tropical flowers. Originating on the beautiful islands of the Pacific Ocean, Monoi de Tahiti oil is a traditional blend of tropical coconut oil and gardenia flowers.

Housed in a big flat bright yellow tub, this moisturizer just about screams SMILE from across the room. As soon as you open the lid you are greeted with the most unusual and beautiful fragrance of tropical flowers. The smell isn’t specifically feminine though so it would be good for men or women.

It’s a very rich creamy moisturizer that takes a little bit of work to absorb into the skin, but it is definitely worth it. Intense and deep is the only way to describe how this moisturizer works. Dry cracked hands are soothed on the first application, and your skin is left feeling soft and velvety.

This product is filled to the brim with yummy natural moisturizers like coconut oil and fragrances like Ylang-Ylang, and it also contains many free trade ingredients such as babassu oil, cocoa butter, and shea butter.

I definitely recommend this to anyone who needs serious moisture.

First Daughters to First Daughters

The Bush twins, Jenna and Barbara, first set foot in the White House when granddad George Sr. was elected president in 1989. The girls were just 7 years old then, and their wonder at the mansion--its beauty, welcoming staff and rich history--is apparent in an open letter they've written to Malia and Sasha Obama.

The letter, published in the Wall Street Journal, advises the Obama girls on the finer points of White House life--sliding down the banister in the solarium, trick-or-treating down the aisle of Air Force One, playing sardines (a variation of hide-and-go-seek) on the grounds. If you're a kid, that is. (We're assuming the President himself doesn't slide down any banisters, but you never know. His job gets stressful sometimes.) They offer a sneak preview of what the Obama girls will experience at Christmas, when the White House is decked out for the season, and advise them to take full advantage of the unique opportunities they'll have.

The twins write, "Go to anything and everything you possibly can: the Kennedy Center for theater, State Dinners, Christmas parties (the White House staff party is our favorite!), museum openings, arrival ceremonies, and walks around the monuments. Just go."

The letter ends on a more somber note, with the twins reminding the Obama girls to keep sight of whom their father really is, and that aside from outside perceptions of the commander in chief, he's their dad, first and foremost.

To hear Jenna and Barbara read their letter to Malia and Sasha, check out this clip from the Today show:

Daddys Little Girl

This is too cute!

Osso Bucco

This recipe is always a hit with my family and its ridiculously simple to make

Osso Bucco

  • 4 tbsp olive oil
  • 6 pounds veal shanks pieces (about 1 large or 2 small per person)
  • 4 cups diced onion
  • 2 cups diced celery
  • 2 cups peeled and diced carrot
  • 3 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 1 1/2 cups white wine
  • 2 cans (28-oz ) diced tomato
  • 4 sprigs fresh thyme
  • 4 sprigs fresh oregano
  • 2 x bay leaves
  • 1 cup kalamata olives, pitted and roughly chopped
  • salt and pepper

  1. Preheat oven to 325 °F. Heat a large ovenproof pot over medium high heat and add 1 tbsp oil. Sear veal shanks until browned on each side and remove. You may have to do this in batches, adding oil after each batch. Remove veal from pan and set aside. Reduce heat to medium, add onion, celery and carrot, sautéing until onions are translucent, about 5 minutes. Add garlic and cook one minute more. Stir in white wine, bring to a simmer, then add tomatoes. Stir in thyme, oregano and bay leaf. Add veal shanks back to pot, ensuring they are covered with liquid (add water if needed). Bring to a simmer, cover then place pot in oven. Cook for 2 to 2 ½ hours, until veal pulls away from the bone easily.
  2. To serve, spoon veal onto a serving plate. Remove herbs and return sauce to a simmer. Stir in olives and adjust seasoning. Spoon sauce over veal and serve with Saffron pasta or risotto, and a spoonful of gremolata.

White Chocolate Mousse

White Chocolate Mousse

3 Ounces White Chocolate
1 10.14 Ounce Container Whippable Soy (or Oat) Cream (divided)
3/4 Teaspoon Agar Agar Powder

Melt your white chocolate with 2.5 ounces of the cream, stir vigorously to combine in a smooth liquid, and let cool for 10 minutes or so. In your stand mixer, whip the remaining cream for 3 - 4 minutes to form soft peaks, and slowly stream in melted chocolate mixture down the side. It will become some what liquid-y and appear to have gone awry, but try not to panic. Sprinkle the agar on top, whisk to fully combine, and place the whole bowl in your fridge for 30 minutes. Once thoroughly chilled, whip for 5 - 6 more minutes until fluffy but firm and serve. At this stage you could also pipe it into bowls and refrigerate for up to 6 more hours before serving.

This stuff is incredibly, deceptively rich- While it feels as light as a cloud on the tongue, it is also unbelievably luscious and creamy. I would suggest serving it with a good bowlful of berries to cut it, or a small dollop on top of hot chocolate would be a delicious addition as well. Top a cupcake with it and you’ll have one intensely satisfying, adult dessert, far too mature for the kids to partake in. The possibilities just go on… And wouldn’t you like to discover them for yourself?

Don’t think that I’ve slighted you for this Valentine’s Day either- White Day, celebrated primarily in Japan, is only a month later on March 14, where white chocolate is given back to any admirers who stopped by with some dark chocolate the previous holiday. So get to it, and try some real white chocolate!

Nana Star

To those who knew and loved her, Elizabeth Owens was the real Nana Star. Born February 1, 1924 in Baltimore, Maryland, Elizabeth had three children, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Elizabeth had a very special relationship with her grandson, Vance. Together they stood by the bedroom window at night gazing at the stars. Vance often asked his Nana, "Is the Moonman really out there?" Nana told him that the Moonman was always there for him. When Vance moved away, Elizabeth sent him hand-crafted cards made of construction paper and illustrated with numerous darling characters, drawn with markers and decorated with colorful stickers. She became "Nana Star" and, with the Moonman and many other friends, watched over Vance. This was Elizabeth's way of showing Vance that she was always with him.

Over time, an enchanting collection of thoughtful cards and remembrances inspired by Nana Star came into being. The characters in this sweet and endearing collection touched the hearts of everyone who saw them.

Now the next generations are involved in sharing Nana Star's magic through a picture book series and toy collection. Linda Saker, Owens's daughter, is the series illustrator; her granddaughters, Elizabeth Sills and Elena Patrice, write and publish the Nana StarY stories; and her five great-grandchildren have contributed inspiration to this special undertaking.

  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 8 ounces white chocolate, chopped

Directions

  1. Prepare a large ice-water bath; set aside.
  2. In a medium saucepan, bring milk, 2/3 cup water, vanilla bean, and sugar almost to a boil. Remove from heat and whisk in white chocolate until melted. Strain through a fine-mesh sieve into a medium bowl set over the ice-water bath. Stir occasionally until mixture has chilled, about 10 minutes.
  3. Pour mixture into the bowl of an ice cream maker and freeze sherbet according to the manufacturer's instructions. Transfer to a covered container and freeze at least 2 hours and up to 3 days. Let sherbet soften slightly at room temperature for 10 minutes before serving if it seems too hard. Serve topped with strawberry mash, if desired.

Safe Ornament Storage
Protect your dearest ornaments from damage as you pack up after the holiday this year. Cut a piece of corrugated cardboard to line the bottom of a plastic storage bin. Then use a hot-glue gun to attach paper cups to the cardboard. Wrap ornaments in tissue paper, and place in cups. Then stack cardboard-and-cup flats inside the container. Store smaller ornaments in egg cartons

Storing Christmas Lights
Next year, don't spend a minute sorting through tangled webs of holiday decorations. Keep lights organized by winding each strand around a piece of cardboard cut to fit in a plastic bin (our pieces were 20 by 14 inches). Use scissors to cut a 1-inch slit at the top of one long side and the bottom of the other long side of the cardboard. Secure one end of the lights in a slit, wind lights around, and secure the other end in the other slit. Store stacked light between layers of bubble wrap in bins.

Duggar Family Welcomes baby #18

Arkansas family welcomes 18th child, a girl; 'We both would love to have more,' father says

AP News

Dec 19, 2008 14:04 EST

An Arkansas woman has given birth to her 18th child.

Michelle Duggar delivered the baby girl by Caesarean section Thursday at Mercy Medical Center in Rogers. The baby, named Jordyn-Grace Makiya Duggar, weighed 7 pounds, 3 ounces and was 20 inches long.

"The ultimate Christmas gift from God," said Jim Bob Duggar, the father of the 18 children. "She's just absolutely beautiful, like her mom and her sisters."

The Duggars now have 10 sons and eight daughters.

Jim Bob Duggar said Michelle started having contractions Wednesday night. She needed the C-section, her third, because the baby was lying sideways. Jim Bob said both baby and mother were doing well Thursday night.

"We both would love to have more," he said.

The cable network TLC broadcasts a weekly show about the Duggars called "17 Kids and Counting." Chris Finnegan of TLC — which handles public relations for the Duggar family — said the show's name would be updated to account for the latest addition to the family. He said TLC also will air a show Monday on the baby's delivery.

Jim Bob Duggar is 43, a year older than his wife. Their oldest child, Joshua, is 20.

The other Duggar children, in between Joshua and Jordyn-Grace, are Jana, 18; John-David, 18; Jill, 17; Jessa, 16; Jinger, 14; Joseph, 13; Josiah, 12; Joy-Anna, 11; Jeremiah, 9; Jedidiah, 9; Jason, 8; James, 7; Justin, 6; Jackson, 4; Johannah, 3; and Jennifer, 1.

"Our whole family is excited about Jordyn's addition to our family," Jim Bob Duggar said. "She's just perfect in every way."

The Shape Of A Mother

From The Shape Of A Mother...
"

One day I sat in a restaurant in Anaheim, California eating breakfast, when a woman passed by my table with her infant carrier in tow. As she lifted it up to fit between the tables, her shirt raised and I saw that, although she was at a healthy weight and her body was fit, she had that same extra skin hanging around her belly that I do. It occurred to me that a post-pregnancy body is one of this society's greatest secrets; all we see of the female body is that which is airbrushed and perfect, and if we look any different, we hide it from the light of day in fear of being seen. That makes me want to cry. Sure we all talk about the sagging boobs and other parts, but no one ever sees them. Or if they do, it's in comical form, mocking the beauty that created and nourished our children.

It is my dream, then, to create this website where women of all ages, shapes, sizes and nationalities can share images of their bodies so it will no longer be secret. So we can finally see what women really look like sans airbrushes and plastic surgery. I think it would be nothing short of amazing if a few of our hearts are healed, or if we begin to cherish our new bodies which have done so much for the human race. What if the next generation grows up knowing how normal our bodies are? How truly awesome would that be?"

Chef and Father

With all the food contamination in the news lately its hard to put your trust in food companies to keep you safe, especially when it comes to the most vulnerable members of our families...
But what are our alternatives? Making your own is an economical and healthy choice, its also the best way to assure that only quality ingredients are being fed to your child(ren)
There are a lot of great books out there to teach you how to make your own nutritious and yummy meals for infants and toddlers, but if you're like me, you learn better from seeing. Thats eher chef and father comes in.
Chef Greg (who isnt hard to look at) knows that we dont have all day to cook a meal and his quick easy to duplicate recipes come together very quickly

"I am a working parent, too. Just because I am a professional chef doesn’t mean I’m at home all day cooking for my daughter. So I developed a system that made it easy for me or my wife to prepare a healthy homemade meal in minutes. With our extra time, we spent more nights as a family together at the table and I realized how important this was. I felt this was something that has faded away in our society and I wanted to help bring it back. The next step was to figure out how I could help other parents".

crispy salted oatmeal white chocolate cookies

One of my favorite sites to "borrow" recipes from is Smitten Kitchen. Not only are the recipes all great, btu the photography that goes along with the recipes will leave you drooling. To go along with this months challenge here is a Smitten Kitchen recipe for white chocolate oatmeal cookies...

Crispy Salted Oatmeal White Chocolate Cookies
Adapted from Cook’s Illustrated

The original recipe didn’t have white chocolate in it, but it really works wonderfully in here. Even if you’re a dark chocolate fan. Watch out, use the good stuff and this may even convert you.

1 cup all-purpose flour
3/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon table salt
14 tablespoons (1 3/4 sticks) unsalted butter, slightly softened
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
1 large egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 1/2 cups old-fashioned rolled oats

6 ounces good-quality white chocolate bar, chopped (not “white chocolate” chips; they’re almost always artificial. I am adamant about this.)

1/2 teapoon flaky sea salt (like Maldon or fleur de sel) (for sprinkling on top)

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line baking sheet with parchment paper or Silpat. Whisk flour, baking powder, baking soda, and table salt in a medium bowl.

2. Beat butter and sugars until light and fluffy. Scrape down bowl with rubber spatula, then add egg and vanilla and beat until incorporated. Scrape down bowl again. Add flour mixture gradually and mix until just incorporated and smooth. Gradually add oats and white chocolate and mix until well incorporated.

3. Divide dough into 24 equal portions, each about 2 tablespoons. Roll between palms into balls, then place on lined baking sheets about 2 1/2 inches apart. Using fingertips, gently press down each ball to about ¾-inch thickness.

4. Sprinkle a flake or two of sea salt on each cookie

5. Bake until cookies are deep golden brown, about 13 to 16 minutes, rotating baking sheet halfway through. Transfer baking sheet to wire rack to cool.

Aprons

The apron is the classic uniform of the housewife, and just putting one on can make a girl feel ridiculously feminine. They also bring with them a sense of nostalgia, and many tributes have been written about them, one of my favorites is a poem called Grandmothers Aron

The principle use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath, but along with that, it served as a holder for removing hot pans from the oven.
It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears
From the chicken-coop the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.
When company came those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids.
And when the weather was cold, grandma wrapped it around her arms.
Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove.
Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron. -
From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables.
After the peas had been shelled it carried out the hulls.
In the fall the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees....
When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds. -
When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner.....
It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that "old-time apron" that served so many purposes.

Nowadays aprons are moving from necessity to accessory with many great patterns and designs available, here are some of my favorites...

New Years Resolutions

Every December 31st that i can remember I've made at least one resolution. I've promised myself I would lose weight, get out of debt, spend more time with family and friends, I've even tried resolving to win the lottery (although that one didn't actually pan out). Ive also taken a lot of flack from people for doing this. If I had a dollar for every time I've heard "Oh i don't make resolutions they never work anyway" , Id have a whole lot of dollars.
While unrealistic expectations of yourself ( This year I'm going to go to the gym 17 times a week, or, ill have my 250,000 in debt paid off by valentines day ) at any time of year aren't likely to come true , I think that New years resolutions CAN be a great way to inspire us to greater happiness. This year Ive resolved to spend more time on me. I find a lot of the time between work, home and the millions of little details in my day to day life I very rarely have time for myself. This year I vow to try and change this, I am going to take me time, and enjoy every minute of it.

Top Ten New Years Resolutions of 2008

from about.com

10. Reorganize Life

On just about every New Year resolution top ten list, organization can be a very reasonable goal. Whether you want your home organized enough that you can invite someone over on a whim, or your office organized enough that you can find the stapler when you need it, these tips and resources should get you started on the way to a more organized life.

9. Be More Charitable

A popular, non-selfish New Year’s resolution, volunteerism can take many forms. Whether you choose to spend time helping out at your local library, mentoring a child, or building a house, there are many nonprofit volunteer organizations that could really use your help.

8. Learn Something New

Have you vowed to make this year the year to learn something new? Perhaps you are considering a career change, want to learn a new language, or just how to fix your computer? Whether you take a course or read a book, you’ll find education to be one of the easiest, most motivating New Year’s resolutions to keep. Challenge your mind in the coming year, and your horizons will expand.

7. Get Out of Debt

Was money a big source of stress in your life last year? Join the millions of Americans who have resolved to spend this year getting a handle on their finances. It’s a promise that will repay itself many times over in the year ahead.

6. Stop Drinking

While many people use the New Year as an incentive to finally stop drinking, most are not equipped to make such a drastic lifestyle change all at once. Many heavy drinkers fail to quit cold turkey but do much better when they taper gradually, or even learn to moderate their drinking. If you have decided that you want to stop drinking, there is a world of help and support available.

5. Enjoy Life More

Given the hectic, stressful lifestyles of millions of people in the world, it is no wonder that “enjoying life more” has become a popular resolution in recent years. It’s an important step to a happier and healthier you!

4. Stop Smoking

If you have resolved to make this the year that you stamp out your smoking habit, over-the-counter availability of nicotine replacement therapy now provides easier access to proven quit-smoking aids. Even if you’ve tried to quit before and failed, don’t let it get you down. On average, smokers try about four times before they quit for good.

3. Lose Weight

Weight loss is one of the most popular New Year’s resolutions. Setting reasonable goals and staying focused are the two most important factors in sticking with a weight loss program, and the key to success for those millions of people who made a New Year’s commitment to shed extra pounds.

2. Get Fit

Regular exercise has been associated with more health benefits than anything else known to man. Studies show that it reduces the risk of some cancers, increases longevity, helps achieve and maintain weight loss, enhances mood, lowers blood pressure, and even improves arthritis. In short, exercise keeps you healthy and makes you look and feel better.

1. Spend Time with Loves Ones

Recent polls conducted by General Nutrition Centers, Quicken, and others shows that more than 50% of people asked, vow to appreciate loved ones and spend more time with family and friends this year.

Do you beleive in New Years resolutions? What resolutions are you making this year? Let us know at HousewifeHeaven@gmail.com
