Lust List - Flat Boots

There was a time when I was heavily into heels, the higher the better. The thought of wearing a flat shoe was depressing, I mean what a waste of the bottom of a shoe!
Then I started working a lot more, in heels. Weekends were my time to wear comfier shoes, and the stilettos took backseat in my closet for slightly more practical footwear on the weekend. Then i got pregnant, and learned the joy of swollen feet and ankles. All of a sudden my weekend footwear was being pulled out on *gasp* a wednesday or thursday!
Chasing after kids became the final nail on the coffin of my "heels can be practical too" line of thinking. Dont get me wrong a sexy pair of shoes is still my weakness, and i still dream of laboutins and gucci stilettos. On date night, I like to wow my hubby with a short skirt and high heel combo, because face it nothing is sexier than heels. Its just that my life about more than sexy now, and for the park and grocery store that have become my stomping grounds a great pair of ballet flats is a whole lot more practical.
And now it seems my acceptance of the necessity of flats in my wardrobe has gone a step further, this season I find myself really wanting a pair of flat heeled boots. There are just so many great styles out there!

What's in a name?

If you named your baby Brooklyn, he already packs a mean street rep. Of course, the same would be true if his name was Jack or Kyle.

Certain names put teachers on edge, according to a survey by Bounty, a British pregnancy and parenting club.

The 3,000 British teachers surveyed by Bounty said names can peg kids as potential troublemakers. Boys named Brooklyn, Jack, Kyle, Liam and Jake reportedly strike fear in the hearts of educators, as do girls named Chelsea, Aliesha, Brooke, Demi, Jessica, Casey and Crystal.

"Teachers are only human and make assumptions like the rest of us," said Bounty spokesman Faye Mingo when unveiling the survey on the group's Web site.

"Rightly or wrong, most of us make assumptions based on something as simple as a person's name, and we base these on our previous experiences," she said. "It's only natural for teachers to make assumptions based on behavior and performance of former pupils with the same name."

Mingo added: "But I bet they're happy to be proved wrong."

The poll reported that 49 percent of teachers said they make assumptions about students as soon as they see the names of the class roster. However, while teachers may roll their eyes at little Brooklyn or Chelsea, 59 percent of teachers said those same kids are usually the most popular among their peers.

The teachers surveyed said half of the naughty kids chill out as the school year progresses.

"While many parents may worry about the name they choose for their child, all children will make a name their own," said Mingo.

Nicole Ritchie at A Pea In The Pod

Recently Nicole Ritchie introduced a line of maternity clothing carried by maternity super store A Pea In The Pod. The line features a few bohemian chic pieces similar to the starlets signature look, but i was really disappointed in the majority of the collection. It just seems boring to me, and the same type of outfits that I could get at Target or Thyme for a whole lot less. I love Nicole Ritchies style, and I love how every piece she wears looks like one of a kind. I wish she had incorporated a bit more of that originality into what she is trying to sell us.

As for value, I really don't see any here. The pieces seem very overpriced for what they are. Dont make any mistakes, I love brand names, and ive been known to spend way more than I should on a great pair of jeans or shoes. I just dont think a tag with Nicole Ritchies name on it makes a pair of maternity leggings worth $58.00.

What do you think? Would you shop from the collection (you can see it here)? Do you think a name is enough to sell a clothing line?

Shabby Apple is a clothing boutique offering a variety of stylishly modest eloquent feminine dresses and accessories for women, preteens, and younger girls.

I happened upon Shabby Apple while searching for dresses and am I glad that I did. What sets Shabby Apple from the rest in my eyes other than their exceptionally chic styles is the fit to flatter section on their site!

The Fit to Flatter section is there to help their customers find the right dress for their figure! I found this extremely easy to use and very helpful. What you do is answer 3 different questions about your body or you can browse the following categories to find your body shape: Hourglass, Apple, Pear, Pencil, Athletic, Womanly, Tall, and Short.

They also offer a great selection of maternity dresses, something a little different then the usual tubes and empire waists offered by most maternity lines. These dresses are actually stylish, and can be the perfect pick me up on those days when it feels like the fashion world has forgotten about us for 9 months at a time.

But the best part of their line, in my opinion would be their baby dresses, I'm a sucker for anything cute and pink so this shouldnt be a surprise. They even offer matching outfits for mommy and baby, and while that could be too cutesy with some dresses, with these its just plain cute.

Shabby Apple is offering Modern housewife readers 10% off until 12-1-09. Use coupon code housewifeheaven10off at the checkout.

Head on over to Shabby Apple to check out their collections, you'll be glad you did.

Ina Mays Guide to Childbirth

Using history as her guide, nationally recognized midwife Gaskin explores what she hopes will be a renaissance in natural childbirth, something that she's been advocating since the mid-1970s. By focusing on how women of ancient civilizations and other modern peoples give birth, Gaskin puts our own hypersensitivities in perspective, uncovering a beautiful, sometimes orgasmic experience rather than a dreadful, painful one. Sure, pain is part of childbirth, but preparing for the pain in a realistic rather than sentimental way--whether giving birth at home or in a hospital--can be the key to a woman's ability to deal with it naturally. Within the pages of personal anecdotes, some touching, some startling, from Gaskin's patients and colleagues, every woman is sure to find something to relate to, whether or not she chooses to have a medicine-free labor. The helpful back matter features a glossary, a detailed resource list including advocacy groups and Web sites, and a bibliography that includes periodicals, rounding out an extremely comprehensive and up-to-date guide on the topic.
