Yoga and breastfeeding

Breastfeeding can be very hard on you upper back and shoulders. If you're like me and you already hold a lot of tension in between your shoulder blades, you can end up in major pain by the end of the day. A few simple yoga stretches can help you to relieve tension and keep this area pain free. The best part about them is that thye can be done almost anywhere, in just a few minutes.

Mountain Pose: Discovering alignment and finding the center

1. Stand with both feet touching from the heel to the big toe, keeping the back straight and the arms pressed slightly against the sides with palms facing inward.

2. Slightly tighten or flex the muscles in the knees, thighs, stomach and buttocks maintaining a firm posture. Balance you weight evenly on both feet.

3. Inhale through the nostrils and lift the buttocks off the legs arching the back and thrusting the abdomen forward and tilt the head as far back as possible.

Bridge Pose: Actively opening the chest

1.
Lie supine on the floor, and if necessary, place a thickly folded blanket under your shoulders to protect your neck. Bend your knees and set your feet on the floor, heels as close to the sitting bones as possible

2. Exhale and, pressing your inner feet and arms actively into the floor, push your tailbone upward toward the pubis, firming (but not hardening) the buttocks, and lift the buttocks off the floor. Keep your thighs and inner feet parallel. Clasp the hands below your pelvis and extend through the arms to help you stay on the tops of your shoulders.

3. Lift your buttocks until the thighs are about parallel to the floor. Keep your knees directly over the heels, but push them forward, away from the hips, and lengthen the tailbone toward the backs of the knees. Lift the pubis toward the navel.

4. Lift your chin slightly away from the sternum and, firming the shoulder blades against your back, press the top of the sternum toward the chin. Firm the outer arms, broaden the shoulder blades, and try to lift the space between them at the base of the neck (where it's resting on the blanket) up into the torso.

5. Stay in the pose anywhere from 30 seconds to 1 minute. Release with an exhalation, rolling the spine slowly down onto the floor.

Child's Pose: Resting the upper back and releasing the neck

1. Kneel on the floor. Touch your big toes together and sit on your heels, then separate your knees about as wide as your hips.

2. Exhale and lay your torso down between your thighs. Broaden your sacrum across the back of your pelvis and narrow your hip points toward the navel, so that they nestle down onto the inner thighs. Lengthen your tailbone away from the back of the pelvis while you lift the base of your skull away from the back of your neck.

3. Lay your hands on the floor alongside your torso, palms up, and release the fronts of your shoulders toward the floor. Feel how the weight of the front shoulders pulls the shoulder blades wide across your back.

4. Child's Pose is a resting pose. Stay anywhere from 30 seconds to a few minutes. Beginners can also use Balasana to get a taste of a deep forward bend, where the torso rests on the thighs. Stay in the pose from 1 to 3 minutes. To come up, first lengthen the front torso, and then with an inhalation lift from the tailbone as it presses down and into the pelvis.

Downward Dog: Deeply stretching the back, shoulders, and legs

1. Come onto the floor on your hands and knees. Set your knees directly below your hips and your hands slightly forward of your shoulders. Spread your palms, index fingers parallel or slightly turned out, and turn your toes under.

2. Exhale and lift your knees away from the floor. At first keep the knees slightly bent and the heels lifted away from the floor. Lengthen your tailbone away from the back of your pelvis and press it lightly toward the pubis. Against this resistance, lift the sitting bones toward the ceiling, and from your inner ankles draw the inner legs up into the groins.

3. Then with an exhalation, push your top thighs back and stretch your heels onto or down toward the floor. Straighten your knees but be sure not to lock them. Firm the outer thighs and roll the upper thighs inward slightly. Narrow the front of the pelvis.

4. Firm the outer arms and press the bases of the index fingers actively into the floor. From these two points lift along your inner arms from the wrists to the tops of the shoulders. Firm your shoulder blades against your back, then widen them and draw them toward the tailbone. Keep the head between the upper arms; don't let it hang.

5. Adho Mukha Svanasana is one of the poses in the traditional Sun Salutation sequence. It's also an excellent yoga asana all on its own. Stay in this pose anywhere from 1 to 3 minutes. Then bend your knees to the floor with an exhalation and rest in Child's Pose.

Legs Up The Wall : Inverting the blood flow and calming the mind

1. Before performing the pose, determine two things about your support: its height and its distance from the wall. If you're stiffer, the support should be lower and placed farther from the wall; if you're more flexible, use a higher support that is closer to the wall. Your distance from the wall also depends on your height: if you're shorter move closer to the wall, if taller move farther from the wall. Experiment with the position of your support until you find the placement that works for you.

2. Start with your support about 5 to 6 inches away from the wall. Sit sideways on right end of the support, with your right side against the wall (left-handers can substitute "left" for "right" in these instructions). Exhale and, with one smooth movement, swing your legs up onto the wall and your shoulders and head lightly down onto the floor. The first few times you do this, you may ignominiously slide off the support and plop down with your buttocks on the floor. Don't get discouraged. Try lowering the support and/or moving it slightly further off the wall until you gain some facility with this movement, then move back closer to the wall.

3. Your sitting bones don't need to be right against the wall, but they should be "dripping" down into the space between the support and the wall. Check that the front of your torso gently arches from the pubis to the top of the shoulders. If the front of your torso seems flat, then you've probably slipped a bit off the support. Bend your knees, press your feet into the wall and lift your pelvis off the support a few inches, tuck the support a little higher up under your pelvis, then lower your pelvis onto the support again.

4. Lift and release the base of your skull away from the back of your neck and soften your throat. Don't push your chin against your sternum; instead let your sternum lift toward the chin. Take a small roll (made from a towel for example) under your neck if the cervical spine feels flat. Open your shoulder blades away from the spine and release your hands and arms out to your sides, palms up

5. Keep your legs relatively firm, just enough to hold them vertically in place. Release the heads of the thigh bones and the weight of your belly deeply into your torso, toward the back of the pelvis. Soften your eyes and turn them down to look into your heart.

6. Stay in this pose anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes. Be sure not to twist off the support when coming out. Instead, slide off the support onto the floor before turning to the side. You can also bend your knees and push your feet against the wall to lift your pelvis off the support. Then slide the support to one side, lower your pelvis to the floor, and turn to the side. Stay on your side for a few breaths, and come up to sitting with an exhalation.

Corpse Pose: Relaxing completely

1. In Savasana it's essential that the body be placed in a neutral position. Sit on the floor with your knees bent, feet on the floor, and lean back onto your forearms. Lift your pelvis slightly off the floor and, with your hands, push the back of the pelvis toward the tailbone, then return the pelvis to the floor. Inhale and slowly extend the right leg, then the left, pushing through the heels. Release both legs, softening the groins, and see that the legs are angled evenly relative to the mid-line of the torso, and that the feet turn out equally. Narrow the front pelvis and soften (but don't flatten) the lower back.

2. With your hands lift the base of the skull away from the back of the neck and release the back of the neck down toward the tailbone. If you have any difficulty doing this, support the back of the head and neck on a folded blanket. Broaden the base of the skull too, and lift the crease of the neck diagonally into the center of the head. Make sure your ears are equidistant from your shoulders.

3. Reach your arms toward the ceiling, perpendicular to the floor. Rock slightly from side to side and broaden the back ribs and the shoulder blades away from the spine. Then release the arms to the floor, angled evenly relative to the mid-line of torso. Turn the arms outward and stretch them away from the space between the shoulder blades. Rest the backs of the hands on the floor as close as you comfortably can to the index finger knuckles. Make sure the shoulder blades are resting evenly on the floor. Imagine the lower tips of the shoulder blades are lifting diagonally into your back toward the top of the sternum. From here, spread the collarbones.

4. In addition to quieting the physical body in Savasana, it's also necessary to pacify the sense organs. Soften the root of the tongue, the wings of the nose, the channels of the inner ears, and the skin of the forehead, especially around the bridge of the nose between the eyebrows. Let the eyes sink to the back of the head, then turn them downward to gaze at the heart. Release your brain to the back of the head.

5. Stay in this pose for 5 minutes for every 30 minutes of practice. To exit, first roll gently with an exhalation onto one side, preferably the right. Take 2 or 3 breaths. With another exhalation press your hands against the floor and lift your torso, dragging your head slowly after. The head should always come up last.

101 Reasons to breastfeed

  1. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding
According to the AAP, "Human milk is species-specific, and all substitute feeding preparations differ markedly from it, making human milk uniquely superior for infant feeding. Exclusive breastfeeding is the reference or normative model against which all alternative feeding methods must be measured with regard to growth, health, development, and all other short- and long-term outcomes. In addition, human milk-fed premature infants receive significant benefits with respect to host protection and improved developmental outcomes compared with formula-fed premature infants… Pediatricians and parents should be aware that exclusive breastfeeding is sufficient to support optimal growth and development for approximately the first 6 months of life and provides continuing protection against diarrhea and respiratory tract infection. Breastfeeding should be continued for at least the first year of life and beyond for as long as mutually desired by mother and child."
  2. The American Dietetic Association promotes breastfeeding
The ADA also believes that "the bonding that occurs during breastfeeding makes it a special choice." The ADA actively promotes breastfeeding, stating that "It is the position of the American Dietetic Association that broad-based efforts are needed to break the barriers to breastfeeding initiation and duration. Exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months and breastfeeding with complementary foods for at least 12 months is the ideal feeding pattern for infants. Increases in initiation and duration are needed to realize the health, nutritional, immunological, psychological, economical, and environmental benefits of breastfeeding."

  3. Breast milk is more digestible than formula
"In recent years nutritionists have voiced concern about overly high levels of protein in the American diet. Since cow's milk contains about twice as much protein as human milk, formula-fed babies usually receive more protein than they need (much of it in the form of the less digestible casein). The stools of formula-fed babies are so bulky because the babies cannot absorb so much protein, and excrete the excess in their stool, whereas breast-fed babies absorb virtually 100% of the protein in human milk."
  4. Not breastfeeding increases mother's risk of breast cancer
Many studies have shown that women who breastfeed have lower risks of developing breast cancer. Recently, data from 47 studies in 30 countries was re-examined. The study group concluded that the incidence of breast cancer in developed countries could be reduced by more than half if women had the number of births and lifetime duration of breastfeeding that have been common in developing countries until recently. According to the analysis, breastfeeding could account for almost two-thirds of this estimated reduction in breast cancer incidence.

  5. Baby's suckling helps shrink mother's uterus after childbirth
The uterus of the non-breastfeeding mother will never shrink back to its pre-pregnant size. It will always remain slightly enlarged.

"Nursing will help you to regain your figure more quickly, since the process of lactation causes the uterus (which has increased during pregnancy to about 20 times its normal size) to shrink more quickly to its pre-pregnancy size. "

  6. Formula feeding increases baby girls' risk of developing breast cancer in later life
Women who were formula-fed as infants have higher rates of breast cancer as adults. For both premenopausal and postmenopausal breast cancer, women who were breastfed as children, even if only for a short time, had a 25% lower risk of developing breast cancer than women who were bottle-fed as infants.
  7. Formula Feeding is associated with lower I.Q.
Human breast milk enhances brain development and improves cognitive development in ways that formula cannot. One study has found that the average I.Q. of 7 and 8 year old children who had been breastfed as babies was 10 points higher than their bottle fed peers. All of the children involved had been born prematurely and tube fed the human milk, indicating that the milk itself, not the act of breastfeeding, caused this difference in I.Q. level. Another study to support this statement was done in New Zealand. Here an 18 year longitudinal study of over 1,000 children found that those who were breastfed as infants had both higher intelligence and greater academic achievement than children who were infant-formula fed.
  8. Breast milk is always ready and comes in a nicer package than formula does
    Need we say more?
  9. Breast milk helps pass meconium
Babies are born with a sticky tar-like substance called meconium in their intestines. Colostrum, or early milk, is uniquely designed to help move this substance through the infant's body.
  10. Breast milk contains immunities to diseases and aids in the development of baby's immune system.
Formula provides neither of these benefits. "Breastfed babies have fewer illnesses because human milk transfers to the infant a mother's antibodies to disease. About 80% of the cells in breast milk are macrophages, cells that kill bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Breastfed babies are protected in varying degrees from a number of illnesses including, pneumonia, botulism, bronchitis, staphylococcal infections, influenza, ear infections, and German measles. Furthermore, mothers produce antibodies to what ever disease is present in their environment, making their milk custom-designed to fight diseases their babies are exposed to as well."

The Time Has Come

Its time.

For almost a year now I have been able to put my body issues aside. I could have that double scoop of ice cream and sneak down to the fridge in the middle of the night for a little treat. I could do all of his without guilt because after all, I was eating for two. I could pat my gigantic round belly and not feel like a house, I was pregnant and the belly was beautiful.
Now I have an almost three month old and i find that i am still eating for two, the belly however is neither cutely round nor necessary, and it needs to go. The problem is, I cant exactly diet because Im breastfeeding, and long hours at the gym are out because I couldn't stand to be away from my beautiful girl that much. So I am on the lookout for exercise that I can include Sophia in. I want to keep it fun and spend some quality time with my little girl as I do it. I also need to start eating healthy, Ill be on the lookout for some yummy and healthy recipes to share.

My stats

Ideal weight 145 lbs
pre pregnancy weight 159 lbs. ( the week before my positive test)
weight at delivery 196 lbs (at 38 weeks pregnant)
weight when i left the hospital 190 lbs
current weight 178 lbs (10 weeks post partum)

that was hard, i have never ever admitted my real weight before.

My Plan of Attack

Yoga
I started classes this week with my mom and cousin. My goal is two classes a week, I would love to do more but I cant bring Sophia and I really miss her during the time classes. I know its good for her to spend time with her daddy but I feel like the best part of me is missing when shes not around.
This week i did three hot yoga classes. It was hard, especially the first class, I learned that when it says advanced, it should not be tried by a beginner. I amy be imagining things but I can feel a difference already. I feel less tension in my shoulders and back, and i seem to be able to stretch better.

Walking
I love to take Sophia out in her stroller, and i know she loves it too. My goal is a walk every day, but this being a canadian winter I know that may not be possible. Luckily I live in a great area for walking and we've got kms and kms of trails surrounding my house, so on days when the weather is good, I can just pop her in the stroller and go.

Chocolate
There will be less chocolate. this will be hard.

Wish me luck!

I have baby fever

Its funny....
When I was engaged I couldn't wait to be married so that we could start trying for a baby.
When I was married I couldn't wait to be pregnant.
When I was pregnant, I couldn't wait to have the baby.
Now that I have my beautiful baby girl, I cant wait to be pregnant again!
I'm beginning to think that this cycle is never ending.
I miss the belly, and feeling her move, and that special feeling that I had when she was all mine. I think I'm ready to try for #2. . .
Now if only I could convince my husband....

Identifying Early Feeding Cues

by Bravado Nursing

How to Identify Early Feeding Cues

Although it seems that all newborns do for the first few days and even weeks is eat and sleep, in fact they do communicate with us from the time they’re born. It is we, as new moms, who need to learn to decode their signals.

The signal for hunger is the most predominant and identifiable among babies. As new moms, we often think crying is the biggest indicator. And while that is definitely the unmistakable one, full-blown crying is actually considered a late hunger cue. To avoid getting to this point (for both your baby and for you), the best thing you can do is to learn your baby’s early feeding cues, and the best way to do this is to limit separation between you both. Being with your baby almost continuously in the first few days allows you to get to know him and feed him whenever he begins to show the first signs of hunger.

Of course, if for medical reasons, you need to be separated, don’t worry. You’ll come together as soon as you can, and learn his signals then.

Here are many of the early feeding cues babies give us. Every baby is unique, so yours may only elicit one cue or several. And you might read this list and think to yourself that your baby doesn’t do any of these – take a few days and watch, and you might be surprised. The important thing is to initiate a feeding when you see any of these.

Early Feeding Cues:

Rooting – he turns his head towards a stimulus and opens and closes his mouth (read the article The Rooting Reflex for more description).

Sucking at his hands

Moving his lips

Moving his limbs

Stirring (in his sleep)

Going into only a light sleep

Making small noises, like grunting or breathing more loudly

Crying – although full-blown crying is a late hunger cue, some babies can definitely go from early cues to late cues within a matter of seconds!

One of the most common dilemmas you can face – particularly in the first 24 hours - is that the baby sleeps most of the time. This can make it difficult to know when to feed him. You can help him along and elicit some of these cues by making him a little less comfortable to help him gently wake up by himself. By undressing him a bit, putting him down somewhere safe (that is, out of your arms), changing his diaper, etc. you may serve to wake him up just enough so he realizes he’s hungry.

As the days pass, you’ll get to know your baby’s particular hunger cues and he’ll gradually start to spend more time awake, making breastfeeding all the easier for you both.

Tips to success:

Try and limit separation between you and your baby in the first few days. This allows you to learn his early feeding cues faster.

If your baby has slept for a long time without feeding, take off a few layers of his clothing or put him down out of the warmth of your arms, somewhere safe to help him wake up and realize he’s hungry.

Initiate a feeding when you see any of the cues. Early hunger signs can turn to late ones – full-blown crying – very quickly.

Slow Cooker Roast Chicken

Being a new mommy can really limit your time. I find that my princess is a little more independent in the mornings but by the time afternoon comes around, shes usually in the mood for a little (a Lot) more attention. For this reason, i have recently come to love my slow cooker, I can get dinner going in the morning and in the afternoon i usually donmt have much more to do than slice some bread and set the table. It's definitely a better solution than the prepackaged food or delivery that I had been relying on for the first few weeks.
I recently tried out this recipe for roast chicken in the slow cooker and it turned out great! I had been planning on using the leftover chicken for a stew the next day, but there was none.

Ingredients

  • 1 whole chicken 4-5 lbs

Rub Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup paprika
  • 1 tablespoon packed brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon white sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon celery salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper, or to taste
  • 1 teaspoon dry mustard
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder

Materials

aluminum foil rolled into 7 or8- 1 inch balls

Directions

Roll aluminum foil into balls and add to bottom of your crockpot.

Rinse and pat dry whole chicken, then rub dry ingredients all over the chicken, be sure to rub some inside the cavity as well.

Set chicken on top of foil balls and set slow cooker to high and cook for 8 hours or until chicken reaches 165 F

Dr Seuss for Nursing Moms

Would you nurse her in the park?
Would you nurse him in the dark?
Would you nurse him with a Boppy?
And when your boobs are feeling floppy?

I would nurse him in the park,
I would nurse her in the dark.
I’d nurse with or without a Boppy.
Floppy boobs will never stop me.

Can you nurse with your seat belt on?
Can you nurse from dusk till dawn?
Though she may pinch me, bite me, pull,
I will nurse her `till she’s full!

Can you nurse and make some soup?
Can you nurse and feed the group?
It makes her healthy strong and smart,
Mommy’s milk is the best start!

Would you nurse him at the game?
Would you nurse her in the rain?
In front of those who dare complain?
I would nurse him at the game.
I would nurse her in the rain.

As for those who protest lactation,
I have the perfect explanation.
Mommy’s milk is tailor made
It’s the perfect food, you need no aid.

Some may scoff and some may wriggle,
Avert their eyes or even giggle.
To those who can be cruel and rude,
Remind them breast’s the perfect food!

I would never scoff or giggle,
Roll my eyes or even wiggle!
I would not be so crass or crude,
I KNOW that this milk’s the perfect food!

We make the amount we need
The perfect temp for every feed.
There’s no compare to milk from breast-
The perfect food, above the rest.

Those sweet nursing smiles are oh so sweet,
Mommy’s milk is such a treat.
Human milk just can’t be beat.
I will nurse, in any case,
On the street or in your face.

I will not let my baby cry,
I’ll meet her needs, I’ll always try.
It’s not about what’s good for you,
It’s best for babies, through and through.

I will nurse her in my home,
I will nurse her when I roam.
Leave me be lads and ma’am.
I will nurse her, Mom I am.

Giveaway Make Ahead Meals for Busy Moms CLOSED

Make ahead meals

I love to cook, but i find that it is so easy to fall into a rut of uninspired boredom. There once was a time that I could pick up any random cookbook and spend an entire day creating culinary masterpieces. That time however ended with the arrival of Sophia.

Sophia and her Sophie

My princess has started to really love her Sophie the Giraffe doll, she always has the biggest smiles when i bring it out. I cant believe shes already old enough to be getting into toys, even if the extent of her playing is eating its head . . .
